Generator Replacement
The Aim
To upgrade the generator supply to the LV4 panel at a critical site, ensuring improved reliability, safety, and operational continuity. The project involved the removal of the existing generator, installation of a new unit with enhanced enclosure and cabling, and full commissioning with minimal disruption to site operations.
Key objectives included:
• Safe decommissioning of the existing generator.
• Installation of a new generator with stainless steel enclosure.
• Integration with existing LV4 infrastructure and control systems.
• Full testing, commissioning, and validation of power continuity to office systems.
The Solution
A detailed and phased approach was implemented to ensure safety, compliance, and operational efficiency throughout the upgrade:
1. Site Preparation & Safety
• AWE operatives entered site wearing full PPE in accordance with safety protocols.
• Car parking spaces adjacent to the LV4 switch-room were cleared.
• Temporary road closure arranged to facilitate generator delivery.
2. Decommissioning & Removal
• Generator delivered and kept on the vehicle pending installation.
• LV4 generator supply shutdown arranged and phase rotation checked/documented.
• Generator terminals proved dead using certified tester; cable disconnected.
• LV4 panel made safe and existing XLPE SWA cable disconnected.
• Old generator lifted and relocated by specialist contractor.
3. Installation of New Generator
• New generator lifted into position using Hi-Ab (specialist contractor).
• Stainless steel enclosure installed and paxolin fitted to top section.
• Existing cable made off and fed into terminal box; cables lugged using certified crimper.
4. Testing & Commissioning
• Dead tests and phase rotation checks carried out prior to LV4 connection.
• Upon verification, start cables and SWA cable connected in LV4 panel.
• Generator started and full commissioning tests completed.
• Manual changeover executed to confirm office systems were powered correctly.
• Supply reverted to mains after successful validation.
The Outcome
The generator upgrade was completed safely and efficiently, delivering:
• Enhanced power reliability and system resilience for LV4 operations.
• Seamless integration with existing infrastructure and minimal downtime.
• Full compliance with safety and electrical standards.
• Improved operational confidence for site facilities and office systems.
This project demonstrates our capability to manage complex generator upgrades with precision, safety, and minimal disruption to business continuity.
